My series for the KQED blog, KQEDPop, just completed.

(To the right is Father Aidan from the St. Columba Catholic Church shot by Dave Jerrett.)

I had an amazing time working on this piece and getting to know more of the wonderful people who call my neighborhood home. I hope this helps continue the conversation about changing neighborhoods and how we can do it compassionately and with integrity.

Ochlos Theatre Lab is presenting our latest piece, UNREST! Site specific, immersive theatrical experience.

This piece is about what's going on now. We started it in 2012. We didn't think it would only get more relevant 2 years down the line.

Come be a part of the conversation.

So this is how I act when I'm in a place I love with people I love talking about a thing I love. This is me at the Great Plains Theatre Conference in Omaha, NE. It was my 5th year attending. I went the first time in 2010 when my play got accepted. This year I directed a PlayLab reading, performed in a mainstage reading and organized the 3rd annual Fringe night.

The Fringe night is a rough and tumble night of short performances by participating artists who have been at GPTC before. I had two pieces excerpted that night. Mia Morris performed Me in "Adore Me." I hadn't seen it with an audience, and since one of the audience members becomes a character in the piece, I had no idea how it would go. It was awesome. And of course Mia had them in the palm of her hand.

Then Kim Gambino, Brian Zealand and Scott Working performed a piece from "dark is a different beast." The scene involved them making out like crazy for most of it, and we staged it in the middle of a ring of desks that is set up control-station style and, I hear, is where board meetings are held. Well board meetings would be a whole lot more interesting if you got to see these two try to rip each others' clothes off. Kim and Mia have both performed in my work before and working with them again this year solidified my immense love of their talent.
In addition to that, many other pieces were presented by Connie Congdon, Eugenie Chan, Dean Poyner, Levy Smith and Mark Bruckner and Witching Hour. And I facilitated one-minute manifestos! Which were amazing! (I learned/stole this from Lucy Ellison and the Forest Fringe group, where volunteers have a strictly timed minute to speak about whatever they feel like.) Josh Wilder sang the state song!

Anyway, it was an amazing week of work and friends and conversation. Now I'm back in the Bay forcing myself not to complain about the foggy weather.

Luckily, I'm already spending time in Sebastapol working with Ochlos Theatre Lab for our summer project. We had one residency to start the process. We begin rehearsals in July with a really exciting cast of Sebastapolians and Bay Area-ites. The show will be presented the last two weekends in August.

I'm also meeting with the producing collective of playwrights--6NewPlays to plan our first outing.

AND...at the end of July I'll be hiking the Wonderland Trail--90 miles around the base of Mt. Rainier. So I guess I better start getting in shape.

Fog or no, this summer shall prove to be HOT!

One-Minute Manifesto

Back in the fall, I was lucky enough to work with an awesome group of people from the UK on a short theater collaboration. I worked specifically with ActionHero (on a project that's described elsewhere in my website) but also got to spend time with other artists in SF as part of Forest Fringe.

The amazing Lucy Ellinson facilitated a series of one-minute manfiestos where each person got a strictly-timed minute to speak about anything close to their heart in public. Part of it was to force yourself to get over the fear of speaking out. I was terrified. And also had way too many things I felt I could write a manifesto on. So instead I wrote a list and read it as quickly as possible. I'm only sorry I didn't get through it all, because right when I was revving into my "Teachers are CEO's" portion and the crowd was cheering, my whistle got blown.

So in an effort to continue this blog, here's my list:

The List:

Schools & Prisons
Prisons & Schools
Private vs. Public Funding
Private vs. Public Information
Pretending we have the information when we know we don't.
Being a good person.
Knowing how to do something useful.
Art.
Funding for the arts.
Sustainable arts.
Sustainable food.
Sustainable communities.
Sustainable relationships.
Knowing when to break up.
Knowing when to fight it out.
Knowing when to breathe.
Knowing how to speak up.
Knowing how to stand up for someone.
For something.
Social networking: Can I be an engaged person without it?
Do I really need to upgrade?
Can I live without an iPhone indefinitely?
Can I be a human being without spending money?
Money.
Making a living.
Making an honest living.
Making an honest living on my art.
Is it OK to not teach anymore?
Teaching felt like the only way I made a difference.
Teaching felt like it was stealing my soul.
Teaching felt like working within a corrupt corporation and trying to make a difference.
Teaching felt like helping the helpless so the powerful people at the top didn't have to worry about it.
I think teachers are the real saints.
I think teachers are the real CEOs.
I think teachers should get the major bonuses.
I think teachers should should should ______
I think should should be stricken from my personal lexicon.
I want did & done & will & have.

(whistle.)

New Website, New Year, New...attitude?

Let's hope this is the start of something amazing. Inspired by the awesome group of playwrights of 6NewPlays, I'm finally getting myself together to create a website. And despite not leaving my house, getting out of my pajamas or doing anything else for 10 hours straight yesterday, it's actually not that hard. Keep checking back here for updates on what I'm working on. Here's what is on the docket for the rest of the year (as of now). This changes rapidly...so please, keep checking. xoxoxo

Spring 2014:
  • "dark is a different beast" film premiere, Bay Area--Dave and Ute will be back in town! (YAY!!)
Who knew 12 minutes could take so long to edit. But it's because it looks and sounds amazing! Again, will keep you updated on specifics of the showing.
  • "Woolgatherer" by William Mastrosimone, San Francisco, CA--I'm directing a couple of amazing actors in this piece. A new piece for me. They've been working on it for a while and asked me to give direction. We're still looking for a venue for a spring opening.
  • GPTC Fringe Night, "Adore Me", Omaha, NE--My amazing friends in Omaha asked me back again this year to wrangle playwrights and produce the fringe night. I love this! Plus it gives me a chance to see really amazing work from some of my peers and try out a few bits of my own. "Adore Me" is very new and...I'm thinking...will star yours truly. I've never really acted in my own writing, so this will be terrifying and wonderful, I'm sure. (Actually...not true. I played "Voice" in the "dark is a different beast" film. But that's different.)
Summer 2014:
  • Ochlos Summer Residency, "Adore Me" , Sebastapol, CA  -- We're gonna give it another go! After a year off we realize that what we did two years ago was actually quite amazing and we're ready to try again, only with more knowledge and a better schedule this time. We'll be continuing work on the "Unrest" piece and also working on individual projects. I plan to expand and continue work on "Adore Me."
Fall 2014:
  • 6NewPlays production of "Adore Me", San Francisco, CA--This is still off in the distant future, but after Barry Eitel launches 6NP with his piece, I'm next up. Unless I get some other amazing, California-centric idea, I'll be doing "Adore Me."
